awesome mist, quiet operation, slightly dubious humidistat, now in its 3rd winter December 11, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've had sinus problems in the past so I highly value my humidifier. I bought this last winter and use it whenever the relative humidity in my apartment is less than 40%.
The VS207 pumps out A LOT of mist. The lowest setting was more than enough for my 200 sq-ft bedroom and usually enough for the entire 600 sq-ft apt. during the day. I only needed the high setting a few times when I didn't leave the unit on during the day and my place was bone dry when I got home. Then it quickly humidified the air to comfortable levels (i.e. > 40% when ~65F inside) in a few minutes.
And it operates very quietly, apart from the occasional glug-glug of the water intake. Certainly quiet enough to not wake up a somewhat light sleeper like me.
The humidistat is somewhat dubious, though. In the 200 sq-ft bedroom I always kept it at 40/45%, and my Radioshack hygrometer 10 feet away (which I trust more than Venta's humidity estimation algorithm) consistently read 5% more. The discrepancy was more variant, though, when I used it in the living room (effectively the whole 600 sq-ft). The Venta would register anywhere from 3-10% lower humidity than the Radioshack. So if you get this then I'd recommend having a separate hygrometer to get a more reliable reading.
One last word of advice: always use filtered water (distilled, Reverse Osmosis, etc.) Numerous people complained about white dust in other ultrasonic humidifier reviews, and hard tap water is always the culprit. I use RO and have had zero white dust.
UPDATE 2008-12-18:
The VS207 is still going strong in its 3rd winter. I'm writing this because I accidentally got some water inside the base while rinsing it off during a tank refill. So I had to disassemble it to dry off the electronics inside. Thankfully it worked fine when I re-assembled everything the following morning. (I let it air dry overnight).
The only thing different is that I unplugged the water heater from the circuit board, since I never use it anyways and don't want to accidentally turn it on. I presume that some of the complaints of water leakage are due to the heater rupturing the pipe from the tank to the mister. Plus I've never needed warm mist, because properly humidifying my apartment makes it plenty comfortable even when the temperature is low/mid 60s.
And still no white dust since I always use RO filtered water. Plus my ultrasonic plate is always shiny and clean, whereas a family member always gets mineral gunk on theirs because they use tap water.
Worthwhile investment December 14, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Purchased the Venta Sonic VS207 through Amazon in late Fall 2007. I have not had it for long but will say that I am pleased with it so far.
After reading reviews, I did read the manual for setting it up and found that it does start. The manual recommends soaking the filter (it's part of the cap to the tank). That is no big deal. One thing, you definitely have to wait a few minutes after putting the filled tank on the device until it fills up the unit. You'll note that bubbles come out of the filter one at a time as the unit fills up. Turning on the device prior to this has no effect. Just wait it out. Hey, what's 5 minutes!
It is very quiet and really does a good job with getting a fairly large area room to a good humidity and maintaining that humidity.
I like the features of selecting vapor strength (which translates to low-med-high). The humidity level feature works well.
Some caveats to consider, but would not change my mind about the product are: 1. "Warm mist" setting is a bit cooler than what most dedicated warm mist humifiers give you. 2. Because of #1, you will find that it does leave some white dust, especially on electrical equipment (e.g., TVs). That is typical of EVERY cool mist humidifier I have ever known. The warm mist setting cuts back on this a bit, but it still does cause *some* (need to wipe the TV every few days). 3. Some critiques have mentioned that filling the tank is difficult. I find that this humifier is no different than any other. Yes, you have to flip it over. This is my 5th humidifier and they have ALL been like that. I find the large handle on the tank easier to deal with than other humidifiers. Now, placing it back down is a bit of puzzle-piece work but it is not all that bad.
I truly like this unit. I like the auto shutoff if it runs out of water. It runs during the day when I'm at work and my dogs are home. I am not afraid of any issues with the auto shutoff.
Also, it does a good job of not consuming too much water. It seems to regulate this very well.
Worth the money for a bedroom humidifier November 24, 2007 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I got this humidifier in November of 2006. This was my fist humidifier to buy, so I do not have much to compare against. This little unit is amazing though. It's quite small compared to what I remember my mother having when I was little. It pumps out a lot of mist, and it does not take long for the desired humidity to be reached as long as the room is fairly small (~200 sq. ft). It is extremely quiet, and the only thing you hear is the occasional bubbling of water as the water from the tank moves into the base, and the clicking of the unit turning on and off. The clicking is not all that loud and does not wake me up when I am sleeping. This is my 2nd season to use it, and I have had no problems with it at all.
The things I do not like about the unit is that it does not do well in large rooms. When I placed it in my living room (~500 sq. ft), it ran an entire day, and never got up to 50% RH (when it was about 30 F outside). In my bedroom, however, it's perfect! I bought mine when they were still $150, and paying that much money, I would have expected it to work for larger rooms. I agree with other reviews who say it is awkward to fill. It does have a handle on the top to make it easier to carry though. The warm mist does not feel much warmer than the cool mist to me. I can feel a difference, but they both feel "cool" to me.
Overall, I am happy with the purchase. I really like the auto on/off for the desired humidity level and the fact that it is almost completely silent. It also has 3 levels of humidity output which I find very useful. Once the room has gotten to the desired humidity level, I turn it to a lower output level so that the unit runs smoother instead of turning on and off a bunch. These were the features I was looking for when buying mine, and it has met and exceeded my expectations with the exception of the room size. If you have the money for it, I think it is a great humidifier and I would definitely recommend it for a bedroom!
poor humidistat January 5, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just bought this unit last night because of the reviews on this site. I was really hoping that I would be pleased for the price. So far, I really like that it's very quiet. I am returning a off brand unit that I got from Wal-Mart because it was just way too noisy and I don't think that it changed the humidity in our bedroom at all. I was still very stuffy in the morning after using it. The Venta unit was easy to set up and I too experienced the blinking light when setting it up. I turned off the unit and re-adjusted the unit in the base and it started to work. My only complaint at this time is the humidistat. I was really hoping for the price that this worked for me although I read several reviews that complained about it. I am going to give it 24 hours before calling customer support or returning it but the reading has been on 30% for about 12 hours. It has not changed once. This worries me enough to want to return it. Other than the humidistat, I like it but I don't think that I am willing to spend $100 and it doesn't work even a little bit.
Best so far... January 13, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the best humidifier we've had so far. We've been looking for one that isn't a fan and loud. This one is basically silent. I don't know about the accuracy of the humidity meter as others have commented, but it's easy to use and very quiet. It is awkward to fill and can get heavy. Would be nice if you can fill it from the top. Only other issue for us is that condensation builds on the ceiling of the water tank and therefore you can hear the water dripping back down. Not a problem if you're already asleep, but can be a little annoying if you're trying to fall asleep. Also, the white cap on top is loose so our cat likes to get on top of the machine and flip the thing about at all hours of the night. We had to tape it down. That's not a real reflection of the product - just that we have a weird cat I guess. Would highly recommend.
