4 out of 5 stars Quality Ultrasonic Room Humidifier   January 11, 2008
6 out of 6 found this review helpful

We have been using the Venta VS207 Sonic Cool/Warm Mist Ultrasonic Room Humidifier now for about two weeks. So far we are extremely impressed with the performance of this unit. We have installed it in our 16'x14' master bedroom, which gets quite dry durring the winter months. This humidifier was very easy to setup and was producing plenty of humidifying mist in just minutes. It raised the humidity level of our room by 10% within just a few hours. However, it also produces quite a bit of white dust on the front of our 32" LCD television, and was clearly visible on most other dark surfaces in our room as well. Using the "warm mist" feature helped a little but we ultimately had to start using distilled water (as recommended by other reviewers here on Amazon) in the Venta VS207 to eliminate the white dust. There is now virtually no dust seen in our room since we started using the distilled water (been using for about 1 week now).

As others have noted, the humidistat built into this unit is nearly useless. It was reading 50% humidity while the wall mounted Oregon Scientific temp/humidity station in our room showed just 38%. We have learned to set the humidistat of the Venta VS207 about 15 to 20% higher in order to achieve the desired humidity in our bedroom.

We are extremely happy with our Venta VS207 Ultrasonic Room Humidifier. Now that we are using distilled water we have no more white dust in our room, and we have found a work-around for the poor quality humidistat built into this unit. Our only other complaint is that the handle on the tank prevents us from sitting it on the counter, after filling, in order to screw on the cover. As the tank must be inverted in order to fill it, and since the handle is curved and does not allow the tank to sit flat while inverted, one must cradle the tank in your arm while screwing on the threaded cover with your other hand. I am afraid the weight of the full tank will crack the handle if we tried to balance it on the counter while replacing the cover. Still, this is a minor issue when compaired to the overall great build quality of this humidifier. It does its job well and is nearly silent during operation. I find it easy to recommend this model to anyone looking for a quality single room humidifier.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Venta VS207 vs Venta 370 vs Enviracaire EWM-220   January 13, 2008

Review of Venta VS207 vs Venta 370 vs Enviracaire EWM-220, January 13, 2008
By Venkat (PA) - See all my reviews

I recently purchased three different humidifiers (Venta 370 @$200, Venta VS207 @$100 and Enviracaire EWM-220 @$90) for various rooms in our house. Below are pros and cons of each of these three units:

VENTA 370:
Pros: Quiet operation - perfect for bedrooms, vaporizes tank contents in approx 24 hours to provide ideal humidity, flexibility of cool or warm mist operation
Cons: Leaves a white dust like residue on objects nearby(perhaps an unwanted side effect of ultrasonic vaporization), Expensive $$$, Heavy on refill.

VENTA VS207:
Pros: Quiet operation (like Venta 370), vaporizes tank contents in approx 24 hours, Significantly less expensive than VS370 for comparable performance, Has cool vs warm mist options.
Cons: Heavy on refill, No handles for convenient handling during refill. Leaves a white dust like residue on objects nearby.

ENVIRACAIRE EWM-220:
Pros: Two separate water containers with side handles - convenient to refill water, Vaporizes both tank contents in approx 24 hours, UV light and boiling supposedly destroys germs/microbes in water (can't verify manufacturer's claim).
Cons: Noisy (continuous sound of boiling water from the unit - feels like I am sleeping with a kettle on the stove nearby) - I kind of got used to it after a while, but may be a problem for light sleepers. Unit warns of hot steam emanating from the unit - can potentially be hazardous with little kids in the house.

Overall, for price and performance, the Venta VS207 is the best product. Only wish it had more convenient carrying handles.

4 out of 5 stars Super quiet; easy to use; no dust.   January 30, 2007

We bought this unit about 3 weeks ago from Bed Bath & Beyond (it was cheaper and I had a 20% off coupon). There is absolutely no noise from the motor. The only noise you hear is the occasional "glub glub" of the water moving through the unit. If your heat is on, your room will dry out quickly and the unit will kick and usually stay on until the heat shuts off. I was running this unit at 50% humidity in our baby's room and I would go through the 2 gallon tank in about 18 hours in the winter. The tank is not especially easy to clean if you felt you need to give it a good scrub and it is a little cumbersome to fill but I am very happy with it and we bought another one yesterday. To address one of the reviews--I cannot understand why anyone would want their humidity set lower than 30%. My research indicates that the appropriate amount of humidity for a room should be 50-55%.

4 out of 5 stars Far superior to cold-mist (wick) units   November 1, 2007

I'm another New Englander who needs serious winter humidification. My warm mist unit broke after 3 years of use, so over the summer I got a cool-mist unit: the Vornado. But after using it for about a month, it became clear that it didn't work. That is to say when you want higher humidity in a room, a wicking humidifier doesn't do the job. We have a tightly sealed dormer bedroom that's bone dry - the vornado made it comfortable for being upstairs for a short amount of time, but overnight humidification was too challenging.

I figured I'd try an ultrasonic humidifier, and the Venta VS207 wasn't too expensive. In a nutshell, a humid fog just pours out of the machine and is instantly absorbed into the air. You can turn on the heat button so the humidity doesn't pull the ambient temperature down too much. The humidity control helps out by letting you set the optimal moisture level, and saving some electricity when that point is reached.

After one night of use, I slept the better than any other night in a month. It's also way quieter than a wicking/fan humidifier, which some people care about.

Honestly, the real test is how long this unit lasts. If it breaks after 2-3 years, then it's probably a better value to just buy and replace a warm mist humidifier every few seasons. I noticed that Venta's newer models have a 10-year warranty, but the filters are $30 a pop! So for now I'm waiting (not anxiously!) for the VS207 to give out.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the money for a bedroom humidifier   November 24, 2007

I got this humidifier in November of 2006. This was my fist humidifier to buy, so I do not have much to compare against. This little unit is amazing though. It's quite small compared to what I remember my mother having when I was little. It pumps out a lot of mist, and it does not take long for the desired humidity to be reached as long as the room is fairly small (~200 sq. ft). It is extremely quiet, and the only thing you hear is the occasional bubbling of water as the water from the tank moves into the base, and the clicking of the unit turning on and off. The clicking is not all that loud and does not wake me up when I am sleeping. This is my 2nd season to use it, and I have had no problems with it at all.

The things I do not like about the unit is that it does not do well in large rooms. When I placed it in my living room (~500 sq. ft), it ran an entire day, and never got up to 50% RH (when it was about 30 F outside). In my bedroom, however, it's perfect! I bought mine when they were still $150, and paying that much money, I would have expected it to work for larger rooms. I agree with other reviews who say it is awkward to fill. It does have a handle on the top to make it easier to carry though. The warm mist does not feel much warmer than the cool mist to me. I can feel a difference, but they both feel "cool" to me.

Overall, I am happy with the purchase. I really like the auto on/off for the desired humidity level and the fact that it is almost completely silent. It also has 3 levels of humidity output which I find very useful. Once the room has gotten to the desired humidity level, I turn it to a lower output level so that the unit runs smoother instead of turning on and off a bunch. These were the features I was looking for when buying mine, and it has met and exceeded my expectations with the exception of the room size. If you have the money for it, I think it is a great humidifier and I would definitely recommend it for a bedroom!
