Complete for my family of five but not a pro set January 1, 2009 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Can't really go wrong with this one.
These are heavy, well balanced, triple-riveted, forged knives with full tangs (metal fully extends into the handle) and black polymer handles. Besides the 8 steak knives, you get:
- 8" slicer - 5.5" utility knife - 7" bread knife - 3.5" parer - 5" boning knife - 7.75" chef knife - 6.75" Santoku - 3" peeler - kitchen shears (with bottle opener and... screwdriver?) - a heavy solid wood block with sharpener
But... wait... there's more :). You get:
- 3 cheese knives - Mezzaluna for chipping and mincing
And...
- and an $85 coupon that buys you Omaha steaks (I didn't get it and I'm still in conversations with the customer service)
And... if you're about to get married and you add Chicago Cutlery to your wedding registry they will send you a $10 paring knife.
This set is, of course, Made in China but it appears to be a good quality product. Clearly, it's not a 'pro' set but, for our family needs, it's probably the best price/quality combination - purchased as a Gold Box deal.

Note: the $85 Omaha coupon was nowhere in the box and it's not clear what I need to do to get it. I contacted the Amazon customer service and, hopefully, I will able to post an update soon. Until then, the set gets 5 stars.
Update: After some painful communications with Amazon's Cust. Service, I received the following a link to the gift certificate.
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/G/01/00/00/03/09/37/18/309371870._V239546398_.pdf
You can enlarge the image if you first SAVE the .PDF to your computer, load it back again, select EDIT, COPY FILE TO CLIPBOARD. You can then paste it on WRITE (it's much better than WORD) and then grab the lower corner of the picture and enlarge it. Then, you can print it. It's a pain.
Or, you can print the very small coupon directly off the PDF and maybe enlarge it on a copier.
You will need the usual: receipt, UPC bar code. Hopefully, Omaha will honor this offer. You have until early February to mail it to them.
Great purchase! January 6, 2009 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Great set of knives that seem to be of good quality. Found the same set at Khol's on sale for $179.00 without the bonus Mezzaluna and Cheese Knife Trio. The only issue is the box was delivered w/o the $85 coupon for Omaha Steaks. Called amazon and was told I had to speak directly with Chicago Cutlery to get the coupon. This is very discouraging! I do not like the fact that I am responsible for calling. Amazon should take responsibility and contact Chicago Cutlery on my behalf. It was their ad that encouraged me to purchase the knives and I feel like they are not standing behind what they sell and advertise!!
WOW! THESE ARE SHARP January 6, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought these for $59.00 here on amazon and they are so good. The chefs knife cut thru raw steak like butter and the santoku knife is really great. These are better than the Rahcel Ray knifes I have bought in the past. If you want a set of knife that are sharp but cheap this is the set for you!!
Great value, suprisingly good knife January 7, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I didn't get these for the awesome gold box price of $59, I paid nearly twice that. However, I must say that they were a value even at the higher price. I had been using a similarly priced set, different brand, for approximately 10 years. When I received these, I was amazed at how much difference a well designed, sharp knife can make.
They are very sharp, the style is attractive, the built in sharpener is a great idea and the set contains virtually every variety of knife that you will need -- even a Sontuku and a serated bread knife.
Overall, I am extremely pleased with the set and would not hesitate to purchase for any price less than $150.
P.S. I just received the Omaha Steaks, about 2 weeks after sending in the coupon. It would be hard to complain about free steaks and I haven't tasted them yet but I wouldn't say they are worth $85 based on volume. Either way, it's a nice added bonus.
Great value, seem to work well so far January 2, 2009 I purchased these knives as a gift and the recipient is happy so far. The block looks nice and the knives are quite sharp. I have one Chicago Cutlery knife with the same type of handle and have been happy with how new it still looks even after a couple years of use. The mezzaluna and cheese knife trio are a nice bonus - haven't received any information about the Omaha Steaks gift certificate yet.
